Five fun things to do in Budapest

I've been to Budapest before - it's a great city - and that was still my impression after visiting again. Here are five fun things you should do if you're in Hungary's capital city:

1. Splatter some paint
This was super fun, and super cheap. We did this in the Museum of Sweets and Selfies for £16 each (price in August 2024), but it looks like they've now moved location and it's slightly more to do this now. Don't let this put you off booking this splash paint experience though as it's still very cheap, especially compared to what I've seen this sort of thing cost in London.

We arrived, got covered up, picked our paint colours and started splashing paint our canvases! You can upgrade to a bigger canvas, if you want, and whilst it does say that you can only pick three paint colours, they let us pick a few extra. I'd recommend you do this as soon as you can as the canvases need 24 hours to dry if you plan on taking them home. (As you should - we did!) A super fun thing to do in Budapest.

2. Explore some ruins
By which I mean, explore Budapest's ruin bars, which are these quirky, colourful, upcycled and fun bars located in old buildings, primarily around the Jewish Quarter. We headed to one of the more famous ones, Szimpla Kert, which is housed in what was a stove factory set for destruction.

3. Flip out

I don't mean on a trampoline but at Flippermúzeum (Flipper Museum) where you can play on pinball machines galore, some which are over one hundred years old. (There are also arcade machines there, too.) Everything is free to play, and you can stay as long as you want. All it costs is 5500HUF (which was about a tenner when we went). Bargain!

4. Take the waters
If you want to relax and bathe in the thermal waters, you have a few options in Budapest. Admittedly, I can only tell you about Szechenyi Baths as that's where I went on my first visit to Budapest (twice) and where we went to this time round. The yellow Art Nouvea buildings are quite stunning, and there are 21 pools to choose from.

As it was only a few pounds more, we booked a private cabin for £35 each which let us use the baths from 3pm to closing and meant we could keep our things in a private changing room instead of using a public one, then transferring our things to a locker. Bring flip flops and a towel otherwise you'll have to rent them.

5. Cruise down the Danube
Another thing I did before, but still one of my favourite things to do in Budapest, is take a cruise down the Danube. For around a tenner you'll have an hour on the river, which should include a free alcoholic drink. We timed it so it was near enough sunset, but the sights are going to look stunning at whatever time of day you do it. Worth doing it alone for the uninterrupted view of the Hungarian Parliament Building.
