Jane Austen?

I am ridiculously under-read on Jane Austen; I've only ever read Pride and Prejudice, although I've seen TV/film adaptations of some of her other books... shameful, huh? But, I am going to rectify this. I now have Sense and Sensibility, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey, Persuasion and Lady Susan in my possession and I'm sure there are some readers out there who love Austen, right?

So, any recommendations to which book I should start with? What's your favourite Austen book? What's your least favourite? Or are you as under-read as I am?!

EDIT: As a follow-up, it seems that following Do-cember, it's going to be Jane Austen January (or Jan-eAusten-ary :p)! Basically, we're going to do a Jane Austen Book Club (like the book by Karen Joy Fowler; also made into a movie) where we set the order of reads and then discuss the books/encourage each other to make up for our appalling lack of Austen-reading. But, if you're already an Austen devotee, you're more than welcome to be a part of Jane Austen January (which will more than likely spill into February), plus anyone in the world can take part. Oh, and you can be part of this for one book, or all of them! So, anyone in?

  1. I love the adaptations but I am also seriously under-read! I started P and P like 3 times throughout my teens and never got that far! Then I saw You've Got Mail and decided to read it again but I was definately of the same opinion of Tom Hanks that it takes lots of effort to read. Have you seen The Jane Austen Book Club (or read the book!?!?) I have it on DVD but I think my Mum still has it!

Maybe we need like a book club - we both read it and then discuss by blog post or email! That way we can both encourage each other along!

  2. I have seen the film and read The Jane Austen Book Club. I didn't rate the book that much - I actually prefered the film version! :O

Jane Austen January? Yes? No? Anyone else in? You can get all the books for £4.19 off Amazon which is where I bought mine from! And then we can have a Book Club - what an excellent idea, GRA! :D

  3. I'm in from the US if allowed! (I know I seem like some crazy stalker person, but I am just interested in your blog!) Plus, I am a book FANATIC. And under-read in terms of Jane Austen. LOVED the movie "Jane Austen Book Club."

Have recently read Persuasion. (Last year sometime.) That might be the only one. Yikes!

    Count me in!

  5. Not sure I'll have time to participate in the book club (though it sounds like fun!), but Sense and Sensibility is my favorite Austen book (out of the few I've read).

  6. Well, you can always take part for just one or two of the books! :0) There's no way I would want people to feel bogged down with this when they are already busy!

  11. I have a large book that collects all seven of Austen's novels in 1278 pages with teeny tiny writing... I WILL read it all some day!

Pride & Prejudice is my favourite book ever (Rivalled only by Wuthering Heights)! I've read it several dozen times already, and will probably continue to re-read it forever.

I think I'm gonna try my best to keep up with Jane Austen January, but I don't usually find myself with much time to read as I used to; but I'll try! :)
